Lent and Easter

Lenten Study Series Begins February 26 & 27

We are hosting a six-week Lenten study series on Wednesday mornings and Thursday evenings beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 26th at 10:00 a.m. and also on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. beginning February 27th.
Our study book will be by Adrian Van Kaam, who led the program on spiritual direction at Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University. The book is: The Tender Farewell of Jesus: Meditations on Chapter 17 of John's Gospel (1996 New City Press and available on Amazon). During World War II Van Kaam, then a young Dutch Catholic priest, hid Jews and Christians from the Nazis often finding himself hiding with them. Together they read the last farewell of Jesus and it filled them with hope and promise. This event was to inspire him many years later to write a prayerful reading of the 17th chapter of the Gospel of John full of insight and emotion that will help the reader bring the last words of Jesus alive in his or her daily life.

Van Kaam believed that life is a mystery to be lived and embraced the humanity of Jesus as a way of embracing his own humanity. This book traces the last, tender evening Jesus shared with his closest friends around the last supper table and in the Garden of Gethsema-ne. This study will guide us into deeper insights into that night and how they have much to teach us about God’s work of grace in us.
The study is open to all. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board opposite the pastor’s office.
